Abstract

Privacy enhancing tools to support Internet users in informed privacy decision making

The increasing integration of always-connected devices into our daily lives has led to a huge raise of Internet Services. Furthermore, users share great amounts of information that faciliate the development of more applications either to address society challenges (e.g., eHealth, transportation, etc.) or to increase users’ convenience. However, while information sharing can contribute to the betterment of society, it also raises serious privacy concerns. More importantly, users are often unaware of what kind of data about them is being shared with other parties (intentionally or unintentionally) and are unaware of the privacy risks and its long-term consequences.

In this respect, our research aims at increasing users’ awareness and understanding of privacy risk consequences when interacting with online services. To achieve this, Prof. Serna and her team propose a set of privacy and transparency enhancing tools based on state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms, aimed at providing synthesized knowledge of privacy-related information and consequently, enabling users to make informed privacy-related decisions.
