The rapid progress of technology in the 20th century was only possible through the development of quantum theory. Semiconductor-based electronics, nuclear physics, lasers and modern telecommunication techniques are examples of the so-called first generation quantum technology. Here, quantum effects are taken into account while considering large ensembles of particles. Since the 1980s, physicists became able to prepare single quantum objects and investigate their nonclassical properties. Accordingly, new research fields arose, giving birth to quantum technology 2.0: quantum computing, quantum cryptography, quantum metrology etc. The talk will start with an overview of modern quantum technology, its underlying principles, limitations and trends. As an example, we will introduce the quantum key distribution and explain in detail the system being developed within the project P4.

Short Bio

Oleg Nikiforov graduated with a M.Sc. in Physics from TU Darmstadt in 2015. Since then, he is a PhD student at TU Darmstadt in the Laser and Quantum Optics group supervised by Prof. Dr. Thomas Walther. His research focuses on experimental implementation of a quantum key distribution system.
